ADVENT LENT PENTECOST

ADVENT

Advent: the first season of the Church year, leading up to Christmas and including the four preceding Sundays. Advent is a season of expectation and preparation, as the Church prepares to celebrate the coming (adventus) of Christ in his incarnation, and also looks ahead to his final advent as judge at the end of time.

LENT

Lent commemorates the forty days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, according to the Gospels, before beginning his public teaching. The season is marked in the Christian community as a period of reflection, penitence, and abstinence prior to Easter. Lent comes from an Old English word meaning spring season.

PENTECOST

Pentecost (from the Greek pentekoste, ‘fiftieth’ of fifty days of celebration) has its roots in the Jewish Feast of Weeks, which was completed on the fiftieth day after Passover. On the fiftieth day of Easter, as recounted in Acts, God sends his Holy Spirit to empower the Church to perform the mission which the risen Christ has entrusted to it.
